The Pututu is a pre-Columbian Musical Instrument from Chavin, a 3,000 years old Peruvian culture, located in the heart of the Andes. According to the chroniclers Garcilaso de la Vega and Montesinos de Ovalle, the pututus were used in the Inti Raymi and Cápac Raymi festivities and after the Haylli song; they were played by young orejones (Inca nobility).

Our fair trade, hand-carved gourd rattles are made in Central Peru. The gourds are grown in the warm Central Valleys of the Andes, the coastal oasis, and in the jungles. After harvest, they are thoroughly dried, skinned, and then sanded smooth. The designs are carved on the gourd without sketching creating many intricate designs.

Gourd carving is one of the oldest art forms in Peru and dates back to 2,500 BC. Our designs vary so let us pick one for you. Sold individually.

Our sacred ceremonial rattle is hand-crafted in the Peruvian Amazon from chonta wood and gourds. This rattle features an etched animal design on the front and the reverse sides of the bowl. Finely finished with plant fiber tufted tops. Each rattle is a unique work of art and has its own sound—your choice of animal style and size.

Length is measured excluding the tufted tops and runs 10 to 12 inches.

Small bowl has about a 5-6 inch diameter.

Medium bowl has about an 8-10 inch diameter.

Large bowl has about a 12-14 inch diameter.

This instrument keeps ancient musical traditions alive. It was made according to traditional techniques and retains a traditional sound.

Jacaranda wood lends its extraordinary beauty to this quena flute. Crafted by hand, it is a legacy of the Inca, an indispensable instrument in today's traditional Peruvian music. Benito Tito perforates holes of different widths to ensure a sweet sound and tunes it to 440 in the key of F#. The mouthpiece is carved from cow bone and its case emulates pre-Hispanic textiles.

Each item is handmade by the artisan's partners in Peru. Due to the handmade nature, small variations in color, shape, pattern, or other characteristics may be evident. Multi-Color cases will vary. Each piece should be considered a truly unique work of art, lovingly crafted by hand.
