Botanical Name: Endlicheria metallica
Family Name: Lauraceae
Of Interest: Each year's Camino Verde planting campaign includes the preparation of plants from seed for the coming year. In 2009, Camino Verde secured over a thousand seeds of the often-felled, rarely-planted timber tree known as Moena Alcanforada. Over the course of a year, these young seedlings were nurtured and cared for until they reached planting size at a nursery run by the Peruvian government's Institute for Research in the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP). In the next rainy (planting) season, Camino Verde prepared the ground for and planted the untranslatable Moena Alcanforada, a tree in the same family as bay laurel and avocado noted for its fine timber and its rich camphor-like essential oils.
