Our smudging feathers, also referred to as feather fans or smudge fans, are made from turkey feathers inserted into a smoothly carved simple wood handle. This particular feather is a turkey feather. Smudging feather fans are traditionally used with burning sage during prayer and cleansing to direct the smudging smoke where you want it to go.

Gary Halbach, Owner, Living Drums
Gary was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1951. He attended UW-Oshkosh, majoring in social work, and was the Director of the Addiction Treatment Education Program at Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, IL, when his interest in drumming began in the late 80's.
Gary studied the art of drum making with an Objibwe Native in New Mexico, and says, "To me, drumming is the spiritual made physical by the sound and motion of the drum."
In October of 1991 Gary went through the New Warrior Training Adventure where his mission became: "Carry the spirit and energy of the drum to men and women throughout the world."
Drums have connected Gary to people throughout the country. Gary's background in counseling has made him realize that a lot of counseling can be done in ways that are not spoken, and that includes the emotions and feelings that go on with people drumming.
Four of Gary's 24" Ceremonial Drums were used during the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on February 8, 2002 in Salt Lake City!

"Smudging feathers are traditionally used with burning herbs or grasses during prayer and cleansing to direct the smudging smoke where you want it to go. Our Native elders have taught us that before a person can be healed or heal another, one must be cleansed of any bad feelings, negative thoughts, bad spirits or negative energy - cleansed both physically and spiritually. This helps the healing to come through in a clear way, without being distorted or sidetracked by negative "stuff" in either the healer or the client. The elders say that all ceremonies, tribal or private, must be entered into with a good heart so that we can pray, sing, and walk in a sacred manner, and be helped by the spirits to enter the sacred realm. Native people throughout the world use herbs to accomplish this. One common ceremony is to burn certain herbs, take the smoke in one's hands and rub or brush it over the body. Today this is commonly called "smudging." In Western North America the three plants most frequently used in smudging are sage, cedar, and sweetgrass."
